A spectacular vintage Javanese theatrical headdress, an extraordinarily decorative piece of stage costume with a wonderful aged appearance.

Constructed from an elaborate framework of gilt metal, richly decorated with large textured leaves, scrolling foliate forms and sweeping sculptural elements, and set throughout with numerous clear paste/rhinestone stones.

The design is wonderfully dramatic, with tall openwork sides and an elaborate crown-like silhouette designed for maximum impact under stage lighting.

The gilt finish has developed a fabulous time-worn patina, with oxidation, rubbing and darkening throughout. There is age-related wear and some losses to the paste stones and decorative elements, entirely in keeping with its theatrical use and age. It has not been cleaned or restored.

A wonderfully unusual surviving piece of vintage theatrical costume — and equally fabulous displayed as a sculptural decorative object.
