An exquisite and increasingly scarce late Victorian crystoleum depicting The Vase Painter after the celebrated German Academic artist Paul Thumann (1834–1908). Beautifully presented in its original gilt composition frame and dating to around 1900, this elegant piece perfectly captures the refined classical taste of the late nineteenth century.

Often mistaken for reverse-painted glass, a crystoleum is a remarkable and highly skilled decorative art process. A photographic image was transferred onto glass before being painstakingly hand coloured from the reverse, creating a luminous depth and richness that is impossible to achieve with an ordinary print. This technique flourished between approximately 1885 and 1915, but relatively few examples have survived in good condition due to their fragile construction.

The composition depicts a young classical artist carefully decorating an amphora while an elegantly draped young woman looks on, framed by ancient architecture and a Mediterranean landscape. The delicately modelled faces, subtle colouring and exceptional detail make this one of the finer examples of the genre.

The picture retains its handsome original gilt frame, which complements the artwork beautifully and has developed a wonderful aged patina over more than a century.

Condition

Presented in good antique condition for its age. The glass is intact and displays beautifully. There is evidence of sympathetic historic restoration to areas on the reverse, as is commonly found with antique crystoleums, but this is unobtrusive from the front and does not detract from its decorative appeal. Please study the photographs carefully as they form part of the description.

A wonderful opportunity to own an authentic piece of Victorian decorative art—perfect for collectors of crystoleums, lovers of Academic painting, or anyone creating a sophisticated period interior.
