An exceptionally beautiful and wonderfully evocative antique French wooden shop sign, discovered in the historic town of Montreuil-sur-Mer in northern France.
Believed to date from the early 20th century, this magnificent original hand-painted sign is a charming survivor of traditional French shopkeeping, when even the most modest establishments displayed exquisitely decorated signs advertising their wares.
The wonderfully elaborate lettering is individually hand-painted in a glorious palette of faded gold, buttery yellow, soft duck-egg blue, sage green, warm ivory and dusky terracotta. Delicate floral embellishments, elegant flourishes and beautifully shaded typography showcase the artistry of a traditional French signwriter.
The sign advertises six departments of a traditional French clothing and haberdashery establishment:
Bonneterie – Hosiery, stockings and knitted garments.
Mercerie – Haberdashery, ribbons, lace, buttons and sewing accessories.
Lingerie – Ladies’ undergarments and fine lingerie.
Confections – Ready-made clothing and garments.
Chaussures – Shoes and footwear.
Layettes – Newborn baby clothes, bonnets and baby linens.
These delightful descriptions conjure up the atmosphere of a bygone French town, with its independent shops filled with beautiful fabrics, ribbons, delicate lace and carefully arranged garments.
The original wooden surface has acquired a particularly gorgeous timeworn patina, with fine craquelure, gentle fading and beautifully softened colours. Every mark and imperfection adds to its character and unmistakable antique charm.
Original hand-painted French commercial signs of this decorative quality are increasingly difficult to find, particularly examples with such elegant typography, unusual colours and a wonderful variety of traditional trades.
Dimensions: 110 cm wide × 49 cm high.
Material: Hand-painted wood, with two holes for hanging and a small raised ridge to the reverse.

An exquisite piece of French social and commercial history, equally captivating in a country house, vintage boutique, dressing room or French-inspired interior.
A rare and wonderfully romantic decorative treasure, full of history, colour and unmistakable French charm.
