A wonderfully decorative antique French faience tureen by Badonviller, in the beautiful Ecran pattern, dating to the early 20th century.

This is an especially charming example, richly decorated in soft blue-green transferware with a wonderful collection of romantic pictorial scenes. As the tureen is turned, different images are revealed: a sailing ship at sea, a young lady framed by roses, a little bird amongst flowering branches, landscapes and floral motifs. Delicate trailing foliage borders both the rim and pedestal foot, while elegant moulded handles complete the piece.

The underside bears the original BADONVILLER – ECRAN – FT factory mark.

Originally made as a covered soup tureen, the lid is no longer present. Today, however, it makes a fabulous decorative bowl in its own right and would look beautiful filled with flowers, bulbs or plants, used as a table centrepiece, or simply displayed as a striking piece of antique French transferware.

There is age-related crazing and some hairlines, entirely in keeping with its age and previous use. These have been reflected in the price and do not detract from what is an exceptionally pretty and increasingly decorative piece. Please study the photographs, which form part of the description.

French, circa 1900–1920.

Dimensions: approximately 10” / 25.5 cm diameter × 6” / 15 cm high.

A gorgeous piece of old French pottery — faded grandeur, romantic imagery and exactly the sort of thing that looks effortlessly beautiful in an English or French country interior.
