A wonderful example of traditional Victorian ironwork, rich in character, craftsmanship and industrial history.
This handsome late Victorian garden bench is a particularly attractive example of nineteenth-century iron furniture, with its elegant scrolling arms, gracefully curved supports and beautifully proportioned slatted seat and backrest.
Constructed from substantial iron strapwork, the bench features numerous individually headed rivets, creating a wonderfully rhythmic design across the seat and back.
Of particular historical interest are the distinctive ATLAS-marked rivets, associated with F. W. Cotterill of Atlas Works, Darlaston, in the heart of the Black Country’s celebrated ironworking industry.
The rivets feature raised central bosses and distinctive flared lettering, matching a design attributed to the period circa 1880–1900. Their repeated use throughout the construction provides an intriguing link to Victorian industrial manufacturing.
The bench retains a wonderfully weathered surface, with layers of old paint, natural oxidation and the rich patina acquired through generations of use. Rather than detracting from its appearance, this authentic ageing gives the piece an unmistakable sense of history.
Its generous three-seater proportions make it a striking addition to a traditional English garden, courtyard, orangery or conservatory, where its sculptural ironwork can be appreciated throughout the seasons.
Acquired from Lewisham, South London, this is a beautiful and increasingly hard-to-find piece of period garden furniture, combining practical design with the enduring elegance of Victorian craftsmanship.
